Hey everyone, I've been thinking about posting about this for a while now. Especially due to how much observing I have done lately. I have a lot of information that I have gathered over the years for what i believe to be the best possible tactics in airsoft, especially since I too evolved from the springer era, where some people would have springers and some would have automatics. Same goes to some with perhaps "inferior" weapons compared to other seasoned "tacticool" players.
Opening, I would like to disclose a little background information about myself. In 2003, some friends of mine asked me to join an airsoft team called E.T.A.R.S. (Elite Tactics and Recon Squad). They had marching, tests to prove yourself, and provided guns.... some were springers, or gas guns that would only shoot holding them upside down! A quite primitive start up. We would do tactics as far as burying ourselves in leaves and sneaking through neighborhoods at night for miles. The guys who ran it, Ben and Steven Lamb, were awesome at the game and had great ideas.
I then joined the Marine Corps in October 2005. I relearned my entire life. Tactics in the Marine Corps are based directly around weapons. A fire team is consisted of 4 men. A Team Leader(M16/M203), Machine gunner(M240 or M249), Assistant Machine gunner(M16), and Rifleman(M16). My 6 1/2 years in the Marine Corps were based off this concept, even when my MOS was 1371 Combat Engineer. When Combat Engineers deploy, we trained and lived with the 0311 Infantry. We had to know their tactics and how we can support them by blowing a path for them to assault the enemy. Even in Iraq, our convoys were based after the weapons. The Machine guns are spread through the convoy by firepower. M240s, M249, M2s, and Mk19s. Placement is key to supporting any fire support effort. M240 on lead, M249 in the center, and Mk19 or M2 on the rear. Placement has it's reasons when you think about it.
I have continued to play airsoft and grow in the sport with some awesome guys. We usually go OPFOR with some good legitimate loadouts to kill the norm, and I will say, when we get our guys together, we know exactly what each other are thinking and can come up with some smooooth plans! We place our weapons due to usage and utilize our camouflage uniforms to the max; because they work. lol
You may be thinking: "But, Polkovnik, what exactly are you trying to say?!" Here is my observation: SO many times over, I see groups playing with no flow to their madness. They will make a straight line, no weapons placement, and not utilizing their camouflage or surrounding concealment.
Here are Polkovnik's Rules to Airsoft Tactics and my explanations:
1:BASE YOUR GROUPS ACCORDING TO WEAPONS USAGE!
For instance, if you have 2 springers and an AEG, put the AEG on an elevated position and flank it with the springers. Those riflemen with the springers can support that AEG by giving fire directions to it and provide security from those approaching the flanks. If you have a sniper rifle with some range, do the same. Don't let that sniper go alone. Keep some spotters and security with them. When closing with the enemy, move the lesser (assault) weapons first, then set that support weapon in place with them, keeping at least 10 meter dispersion.
2: KEEP DISPERSION BETWEEN MEMBERS OF YOUR GROUP!
The more controlled dispersion you have in airsoft, the more ground you control. Roughly 20-30 ft dispersion allows all members of your team to have what is called a "sector of fire." Basically a 45 degree angle from side to side of your weapon's barrel, for maximum coverage of possible enemy positions. Also, this disallows the enemy from killing everyone with one machine gun burst or one grenade, or even a mortar.
3: DON'T HIDE BEHIND TREES.
Trees silhouette yourself about as much as you get by standing on top a ridge. When I see someone hiding behind a tree, i will go semi-auto and walk my rounds to hit your sides, or i will wait until you poke your head out to turkey-peak. If you hide behind a tree, lay on the ground with your weapon pointed toward the enemy, minimizing your silhouette. Do not stand. Cover AND Concealment, cover and concealment, cover and concealment! Cover is defined as something a round will not make it through. Concealment is merely something that obscures the enemy from knowing you are... you.
4:UTILIZE YOUR UNIFORM/APPAREL!
Camouflage works best.... when you use it! Keep to the shadows, and close to the ground. Put leaves on top yourself. It only takes like 5 seconds. If you have jeans on and sitting in position, bury them suckers in leaves! Dress to the season. In the green summer, I wear KLMK. I get comments all the time on how invisible I am, some people even referring to me (as a bush) in mid battle(story for later!) in winter months, USGI Woodland or Alpenflage. Alpenflage is a miracle material.
5:LET OTHERS ON YOUR TEAM KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS!
Start the game to the point where every one on your team is "in-the-know" of your group's plan. I know not every one on the battlefield knows each other, but you have to work together for a common cause: Pain toward your opposition! If your team is going left flank, let the Right and Center know.
This can help mitigate friendly fire, and assist in knowing your role in the course of battle.
6: TRIGGER DISCIPLINE!
If you know the enemy is out of range of your weapon, back off and let them walk in to your range. You know they will. When people duke it out at maximum range, all you do is waste them $$$ dollar signs. Fire like you mean it, and mean it, by hitting or suppressing your target.
In conclusion, I'd like to state, these are just some thoughts that I think could really help everyone out there in the game. If you think you could/should adapt your tactics, consider these ideas. Some of these are just my personal pet peeves. Like, boot laces un-tucked. LOL. My favorite place to play airsoft was either Four Pole Creek or LHC, which both places produced amazing tactical advantages. When you found an advantage you could use, you used it every time after that. As much as I hate to disclose these secrets, I think, given application, someone could use something from these ideals. If you all have some ideas to airsoft tactics, let's talk about it!
