How many of you have attended a milsim game and amongst the ranks of smartly outfitted US players resides that guy. You know the one- wearing ACU's, sneakers, carrying an AK, black vest with SWAT in big letters and wearing what looks like a welders mask with hot rod flames on it?
This can be a buzz kill for players and game organizers, plus cause confusion on the field which leads to friendly fire incidents. So is it their fault? No, like with anything there could be multiple reasons why players show up like this and instead of shunning them or making them the butt of many a noob joke, I'm going to post up some tips that will help you fit in on a US side and do it on the cheap. This is by no means an in depth study of any period US uniform, thats beyond the scope of this post and maybe one of our other members could put something up in the future.
I'm assuming you have a US style weapon, M16/M4, M14, SAW, etc etc. If you dont, then please start looking to play on OPFOR teams in the future. (Unless you have some kind of NATO kit going on etc)
Step 1 The uniform.
I'm choosing the classic Woodland BDU uniform, it works and you can find it cheap on Ebay, flea markets and surplus stores. Stay away from ACU, yes it looks delta13ninjacool on Xbox games, but it sucks in the woods of this state. Pick yourself up the pants and long sleeve top, these pieces are durable and can be found in may sizes. Like the picture shows, get yourself the matching patrol cap or my favorite, the boonie hat.
Step 2 Footwear
With this we are not going to be picky, any style black or desert tan tactical/surplus boot will work, anything that will keep you from showing up in your Nike's.
Step 3 Web Gear
If you are just starting out or find yourself lacking in funds, dont throw your money away on Chinese rip off vests when you can pick up some ALICE gear for dirt cheap on Ebay or surplus stores.
The basic setup you will need to assemble will be the Y suspenders, pistol belt and Mag pouches. These have several variations but serve the same purpose.
Once you have the base you can add on a buttpack, canteens (or wear a camel back), compass pouches that also fit small radios or bandages, first aid kit, pistol mag pouches etc.
Another option is the Enhanced load bearing vest, this was an updated version of the lbv 88 with slanted mag pouches and can be used with the ALICE family of equipment. You will need to at least purchase an Alice pistol belt for use with this vest.
Step 4 optional
As we know not every milsim game will have the US forces wearing green, so it would be in your best interest to have a tan based uniform handy just in case. For our purposes here, we are going with DCU's since they are easy to find and probaly won't hurt your wallet like the newer fancy stuff like Multicam will. Just like the BDU's, grab yourself a top, pants and or patrol cap/ boonie hat.
The best thing about using the DCU's is that your ALICE gear mentioned above will still look perfectly normal when used in conjunction at a tan based game.
(Out of respect, if you buy old surplus clothing and it has unit patches, skill tabs rank on it. Please remove it, if you didn't earn it don' t wear it.)
So there it is folks, I hope this helps you new people to not be "that guy" at milsim events.
