I have been seeing this question pop up every once and a while and I feel I need to explain why standardization is important in airsoft. If you have never asked yourself this, then you probably already understand why it is important.
The most common question or comment I see pertaining to standardization is " I dont want an M4(M16), everyone has an M4" There is probably a reason why 90 percent (roughly) of airsofters use the M4.
1) Its what the US Military uses. Since most of us tend to fashion ourselves after the US Military, it is logical that we use the same weapons, gear, etc. that they do.
2) The M4 family allows for a wide verity of customization that still allows for standardization. On the M4 you can mount anything you want and fulfill a number of roles depending on the equipment you have.
3) Because 90 percent of airsofters use the M4, manufacturers know this and parts availability is best for the M4 platform.
The M4 is really a jack of all trades. By using a short barrel and hi speed gearbox you can have a CQB monster or by having a long barrel and a semi only, hi power gearbox you can have a DMR. But, the most important thing is that they use the same mags. This is the most important thing about standardization for an M4, it allows people to share mags in a fire fight. It allows people to share or easily trade parts, because of their commonality.
Now, there are those who do not use the M4/M16. Is this to say that they are wrong, Hell No! While the M4 is one of the best platforms for customization, they are not perfect for every situation. Just like the military, not everyone has an M4, the need for support, snipers, medics is prevalent in Airsoft. However, this does not mean that everyone can be Shooter or Rambo.
So, if you are wondering what is my point or goal for writing this, it is to simply point out that just because everyone has an M4, does not mean that it is a bad thing. This commonality is a good thing. There is a place for other weapons, but for 90 percent of airsofters, the M4 platform is the way to go.
If you have any other things in airsoft that you see need standardized or think that its good that they are (besides rules as these have been covered) point them out.
