Hey all,
I know I am one of those dreaded Airsoft Ohio guys ;D and I know you do things a little bit differently, but I want to discuss a few things that have been popping up.
Shooting glasses
Here is a repost of a reply that I submitted to another member on their thread. This is not to call them out, but I know that a lot of players still use shooting glasses for airsoft. They are not safe. You only have one pare of eyes and you need to protect them.
Hey I play to have fun too, but its not an excuse not to be safe. Full seal goggles are safer than shooting glasses, fact. The eye is the only part of the body that can be seriously damaged without the chance of repair, fact. The way to treated my advice tells me that your "events" are not something I would want to go to or take part in. Also, just because its on Govt land doesnt mean parents will not sue YOU!
So next time someone give you advice, especially someone who hosts awesome, safe events, just say "Thanks for the tip." Then you can keep the "I dont care" attitude to yourself.
I am writing this not to be mean to you, but to try to show that your actions reflect on the community. Lets say that one of your friends loses an eye to airsoft and your the one who shot at him, missed, but a BB hit a tree and ricochet back to hit the back of his shooting glasses and hit the eye. How would you feel about that? Would they still be your friend? Do you honestly think his parents wouldnt sue you? Then there is the whole can of worms where this would come out in the media and reflect very badly on the community.
If you guys want to play in your backyard thats one thing, but the Mods of the forum and most of us serious players want to move forward with legal fields, accountability, and a community that works to improve the sport. Again, I am not trying to belittle you, make fun of you, or anything like that. I am trying to get you to think above the group of you and your friends and think about how your actions could impact the rest of the airsoft community.
FPS Limits
With the upcoming game at Scary Creek there has been some discussion about these. While I personally think that 450fps and full auto is a little high, the fact that we are going to be play primarily in the woods really means that if I get hit with a 450fps gun that means at 100 ft its like getting shot at 50ft with a 350fps gun. I also understand that many of the Chinese clones shoot over 400fps out of the box and with the lack of stores and techs it is hard for a new player to downgrade their own spring.
Now, with that being said, just because your gun might shoot over the 400 mark this means that you must pay extra attention to your MEDs (Minimum Engagement Distance). If you think you are too close you probably are. If you have the drop on someone and they are a little bit out of the safety killzone, go ahead and call it. This doesnt mean you can walk around the woods yelling safety kill. I know that I would appreciate not getting shot that close from a hot gun. Now, if someone makes a safety kill, EXCEPT IT! Dont be like, "I dont play with those" You are acting immature, its not a question of manhood, its a safety thing. If you want to host an event where without MEDs, thats fine, but you cant post it here as per forum rules.
Center Mass
Make sure you are aiming for center mass. If you shoot someone in the gear, it doesnt hurt, but the can usually hear it. If they dont call their hits, dont automatically assume they are cheating. Rather aim for an arm or a leg so that they can feel it. Also, no head shots, UNLESS that is the only they they are exposing. In these instances aim higher so if it hits them in the face it will be on the goggles or hat/helmet, thus you try to avoid the teeth. Airsoft BBs can hurt, just use your judgement and think where you wouldnt mind getting hit and where you wouldnt like to get hit
Red Rags
Use them! They make identifying KIAs much easier. Also if you are pinned down, then get hit. Hunker down and yell hit a few times, get your red rag out and wave it all around. This will save you from getting lit up. Also, if you are firing full auto at someone remember you are sending approximately 15bbs at them a sec. So if you keep lighting them up it will probably piss them off, then problems will arise. Finally, remember it takes a second to get those red rags out. Its not like video games where the little triangles on our heads go from red to black. If you think they are hit, give them a sec. If they shoot back, keep going.
Insurance
We are trying to build up legitimate fields in WV. I know that some of you dont want to do the whole pay to play thing and airsoft can be fun in the woods or a backyard. The problem is that without insurance it is very risky to allow people to play a sport where they could get hurt. Insurance allows for us to have fun, but protects those who own the field encase someone is injured. Also, building structures and using props in a game, cost money. The field fees help pay for this. Scary Creek is around 15 bucks a head, the Raiders games are 15 a head. We both have nice fields and insurance. Plus we generally will have higher turnout numbers. Finally, if we want to truly promote the sport you will need to show parents and the public that we are more then young kids playing in backyards with Walmart springers (if you are, no offense). If the sport is to survive we need places to play. We need to be responsible and we need to work together to turn airsoft in WV into what it can be.
I hope that I have explained my position and illustrated what we as a community are moving towards. I know that not everyone will agree with me, but you must realize that we need to have these rules and regs if we are truely succeed. Thank you.
